#1Place du Casino

Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo

The Belle Époque grand hotel that frames one side of Monaco's best-known square

Monte-Carlo, Monaco

  • Dining
  • Views
  • Spa
  • Wine
  • Welcoming guests since 1864
  • Run by the Société des Bains de Mer
  • A wine cellar hollowed out of the rock below
Signature diningAlain Ducasse's Louis XV

Our take on Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo

Since 1864 this hotel has held its corner of the Place du Casino, a white façade of balconies and carved stone looking over lawns and fountains toward the ornate Casino de Monte-Carlo. A thorough renovation in recent years rebuilt much of the building behind that frontage while keeping the lobby's dome and gilded columns intact. Bedrooms are pale, airy and quietly luxurious, and many turn toward the harbour, where yachts crowd Port Hercule beneath the Rock.

Food is the other reason people come. The Louis XV, Alain Ducasse's dining room, fills a salon on the ground floor, and Le Grill on the top floor sits under a roof that opens to the sky on fine evenings. Deep below street level, a cellar cut into the rock holds an enormous wine collection. The Thermes Marins spa and the Jardins de la Petite Afrique are both a stroll away. The casino across the square counted for nothing in this order.

Best for: A milestone Riviera splurge where the address, the dining and the harbour view are the whole point.

#2Canal-side suites

The Venetian Resort Las Vegas

An all-suite resort that rebuilds the canals and bell tower of Venice on the Strip

Las Vegas, Nevada

  • Pool
  • Spa
  • Shopping
  • Shows
  • Every room is designed as a suite
  • Gondolas drift along an indoor canal
  • Shares its complex with The Palazzo tower
Indoor journeyGondolas beneath a painted sky

Our take on The Venetian Resort Las Vegas

The Venetian opened in 1999 on the land once occupied by the old Sands, and its Strip frontage borrows freely from Venice: a campanile, a Rialto-style bridge and a colonnaded copy of the Doge's Palace. Every room is laid out as a suite, typically with a sunken lounge a few steps below the bed. The resort also takes in The Palazzo, a taller sister tower with its own lobby, so the place can feel like two hotels under one roof.

The Grand Canal Shoppes wind beneath a painted sky, and gondoliers steer boats along an indoor waterway while singing to their passengers. Outside, a pool deck styled on Italian gardens fills the daytime, and a large spa offers a calm retreat from the boulevard. Restaurants run from casual trattorias to dining rooms led by well-known chefs. The Sphere rises right next door, and a quick cab heads east to the convention halls. None of the gaming tables nudged this placement.

Best for: Groups who want room to spread out, plus a concert or show within walking distance.

#3Cinema glamour

Studio City

A film-themed Cotai resort with a figure-eight observation wheel hung between its towers

Cotai, Macau

  • Pool
  • Shows
  • Shopping
  • Dining
  • Operated by Melco Resorts & Entertainment
  • Golden Reel wheel loops between two towers
  • Water park with indoor and outdoor zones
Signature sightThe figure-eight Golden Reel

Our take on Studio City

Studio City opened in Cotai in 2015, and its look takes its cue from the golden age of cinema, all Art Deco lines and a façade that lights up like a premiere every night. Between its twin towers hangs the Golden Reel, an observation wheel shaped like a figure eight whose cabins circle high above the strip. The resort has since grown to several hotel towers, including a W Hotel, so rooms range from family layouts to sleek, design-led suites.

Families are well looked after: a water park with indoor and outdoor sections keeps children busy whatever the weather, and the event centre stages concerts and large touring productions. Restaurants cover Cantonese, Macanese and international menus. Just beyond the resort, the colonial lanes of Taipa Village offer Portuguese bakeries and small chapels, while Coloane's beaches and hillside trails lie a short taxi ride south. Gaming has its own floor and was no part of our judgement.

Best for: Families visiting Macau who want a water park and a skyline ride without leaving the resort.

#4Mountain gulch

Ameristar Casino Resort Spa Black Hawk

A tall hotel tower in a gold-rush town tucked into the Colorado foothills

Black Hawk, Colorado

  • Spa
  • Pool
  • Views
  • Heritage
  • Operated by PENN Entertainment
  • About an hour by road from Denver
  • Central City's old streets lie next door
Nearby historyGold-rush streets of Central City

Our take on Ameristar Casino Resort Spa Black Hawk

Black Hawk grew up in a narrow gulch after the 1859 gold strike in the Colorado mountains, and brick storefronts from those boom years still line its streets. Ameristar's hotel tower rises far above them, so the upper floors look out over pine-covered ridges and the road that climbs from Clear Creek Canyon. Rooms are modern and generously sized, with the mountain scenery providing most of the drama. The town sits at high altitude, so nights stay cool even in summer.

The tower has a spa, a pool and several restaurants, which makes it easy to stay put after the drive up. Central City, the neighbouring mining town, is reached along a short road and keeps its Victorian opera house and painted shopfronts. Golden, with its historic main street, lies down the canyon, and Denver is about an hour away by car. In autumn the aspens on nearby slopes turn bright yellow. Gaming fills much of the town, yet we judged only the hotel.

Best for: Road-trippers wanting a comfortable mountain base within reach of Denver.

#5New England woods

Foxwoods Resort Casino

A sprawling tribal resort of several hotels set among the forests of south-eastern Connecticut

Mashantucket, Connecticut

  • Pool
  • Spa
  • Shopping
  • Shows
  • Tribal land of the Mashantucket Pequot
  • Hotels include the Grand Pequot Tower
  • Tribal museum and research centre nearby
Short driveMystic's historic seaport

Our take on Foxwoods Resort Casino

Foxwoods belongs to the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and stands on its reservation among the woods and low hills of south-eastern Connecticut. It is less a single hotel than a cluster of them: the Grand Pequot Tower, the Fox Tower and the Great Cedar Hotel each offer a different mood and price, linked by indoor walkways. Tower rooms are spacious and contemporary, and from the higher floors the view runs over unbroken treetops that turn red and orange each October.

Between the pool and the spa, guests can browse an outlet shopping centre on site, catch a concert or a comedy night, or ride a zipline launched from the top of the Fox Tower. The Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center tells the tribe's long story in depth and deserves an unhurried morning. Mystic, with its maritime museum and aquarium, is a short drive south, and the shore of Long Island Sound lies just beyond. Gaming was set aside entirely in our reckoning.

Best for: New England getaways that mix autumn colour, history and a lively evening programme.

#6Bayfront sunsets

Solaire Resort Entertainment City

A glassy bayfront resort where the main event is the sun dropping into Manila Bay

Parañaque, Metro Manila, Philippines

  • Pool
  • Spa
  • Dining
  • Shows
  • Developed by Bloomberry Resorts
  • Bay-facing rooms catch the evening glow
  • A short drive from the international airport
Evening ritualSunset across Manila Bay

Our take on Solaire Resort Entertainment City

Solaire opened in 2013 as the first resort in Entertainment City, a zone built on land won back from Manila Bay and earmarked for big leisure schemes. Developed by Bloomberry Resorts, it is a composition of glass and pale stone, with rooms spread across more than one tower, including the later Sky Tower. Those facing west look straight over the water, and the sunsets across the bay, often streaked with pink and amber, are reason enough to ask for one.

A long pool deck faces the bay, and the spa offers a quiet escape from the heat and traffic of the capital. Restaurants reach from Filipino favourites to Japanese and Cantonese cooking, and a purpose-built theatre hosts musicals and concerts. Ninoy Aquino International Airport is close by, which helps on arrival day. Intramuros, the walled Spanish quarter, and the bayside promenade along Roxas Boulevard are an easy taxi ride north. The casino was kept out of our assessment.

Best for: Manila stopovers that call for comfort near the airport and a view at dusk.

#7Gulf Coast shore

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Biloxi

A music-themed hotel looking over the white sand of the Mississippi Gulf Coast

Biloxi, Mississippi

  • Beach
  • Pool
  • Spa
  • Shows
  • Opened in 2007, after Hurricane Katrina delayed it
  • Music memorabilia displayed through the building
  • Hard Rock Live hosts touring acts
Across the roadMiles of Gulf Coast sand

Our take on Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Biloxi

Hard Rock Biloxi was nearly finished in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina tore along the Mississippi coast, and the resort finally welcomed its first guests in 2007 after being rebuilt. It faces the Mississippi Sound across Beach Boulevard, and its rooms are bright and contemporary, many with views over the water and the long strand of sand that follows the shoreline. Guitars, stage costumes and other pieces of music history hang throughout the public spaces, true to the brand.

A pool with a swim-up bar and cabanas, plus the Rock Spa, make it easy to unwind, and Hard Rock Live brings touring musicians and comedians to its stage. Across the road the beach runs on for miles, and the white Biloxi Lighthouse, standing in the middle of the highway, is a short drive along the shore. From Gulfport, a little further west, boats cross to Ship Island and its old brick fort. The casino had no say in where we placed it.

Best for: Gig-goers after sand by day and a headline act by night.

#8Northern Tasmania

Country Club Tasmania

A low-rise retreat of lodge rooms and villas in parkland on the edge of Launceston

Launceston, Tasmania, Australia

  • Gardens
  • Dining
  • Views
  • Wine
  • Part of Tasmania's Federal Group
  • Villas set apart in landscaped grounds
  • Short drive to Cataract Gorge
Close byTamar Valley cellar doors

Our take on Country Club Tasmania

Country Club Tasmania spreads across broad, green grounds at Prospect Vale on the southern fringe of Launceston, the main city of northern Tasmania. Instead of a tower it offers lodge rooms and freestanding villas scattered among lawns, trees and water features, which gives a stay a rural, unhurried rhythm. Rooms lean toward practical comfort rather than showy design, with space to park the car close by and a sense of open country just beyond the boundary.

The resort belongs to the Federal Group, which also runs Wrest Point in Hobart, and it has restaurants and bars on site. Cataract Gorge, where a chairlift and walking tracks follow the South Esk River through a cliff-lined ravine, is only a short drive away. Launceston's Victorian streets and parks are close as well, and the Tamar Valley wine route heads north toward Bass Strait. Cradle Mountain makes a long but rewarding day out. Gaming played no role in this ranking.

Best for: Self-drivers touring northern Tasmania who prefer space and quiet to a city-centre tower.

#9Bushveld legend

The Palace of the Lost City

A storybook palace of domes, sculpted wildlife and planted jungle at the edge of a game reserve

Sun City, North West Province, South Africa

  • Pool
  • Spa
  • Wildlife
  • Gardens
  • Opened at Sun City in 1992
  • Borders Pilanesberg National Park
  • Surrounded by a planted jungle
Next doorBig Five drives in Pilanesberg

Our take on The Palace of the Lost City

The Palace of the Lost City opened in 1992 as the grandest hotel at Sun City, built around an invented legend of an ancient kingdom hidden in the bushveld. Domed towers, carved elephants, mosaic floors and painted ceilings give it the air of a storybook ruin brought back to life. Rooms are richly furnished in warm earthy tones, and their windows look over a planted jungle, sweeping pools or the rocky hills of the surrounding volcanic crater.

Below the palace, the Valley of Waves offers a large wave pool with a sandy shore, water slides and a lazy river that families love. The Bridge of Time shakes and releases steam at set intervals to re-enact the earthquake of the legend. Next door, Pilanesberg National Park is home to lion, elephant, rhino, leopard and buffalo, and early-morning game drives are the highlight of most visits. Johannesburg is a few hours away by road. We set the casino aside entirely.

Best for: Safari-minded travellers who want theatre and comfort between game drives.

#10Detroit riverfront

Caesars Windsor

Two riverside hotel towers looking straight across the water at the Detroit skyline

Windsor, Ontario, Canada

  • Views
  • Pool
  • Shows
  • Dining
  • Opened as Casino Windsor in the 1990s
  • Rooms in the Augustus and Forum towers
  • The Colosseum hosts concerts and comedy
From the windowDetroit's skyline across the river

Our take on Caesars Windsor

Caesars Windsor stands on the bank of the Detroit River in Windsor, Ontario, and few hotel windows anywhere give such a direct view of another country. From the upper floors of its two towers, Augustus and Forum, the Detroit skyline lines up across the water and glitters after dark, while long lake freighters slide past on their way between the Great Lakes. Rooms are comfortable and contemporary, and the river-facing ones are well worth requesting.

The Colosseum, a large indoor venue, books touring musicians and comedians through the year, and the resort adds a pool and a range of restaurants. Directly outside, a riverside trail runs for kilometres through landscaped parkland, passing an open-air sculpture park along the way. Downtown Windsor is a few minutes on foot, and the tunnel and bridge to Detroit make it simple to see both cities in one trip, passport in hand. The gaming hall was ignored in our ranking.

Best for: Cross-border city breaks with a riverside walk and a skyline view from bed.

Why use this list

The room comes first

Every resort is judged on what an overnight guest actually lives with: the bed, the quiet, the view, the food and the streets outside. The gaming floor is mentioned for context and given no say.

No money behind the order

Hotels cannot pay to enter this showcase, nor to move up it. Links point at official hotel addresses with no referral code, so a booking you make earns us nothing at all.

Facts we can stand behind

Details come from what each property publishes and from established reporting. Where we were not sure, we kept the wording general rather than invent a number.

Quick answers

Can I gamble or book a room here?

No. This website hosts no games and no reservation tools. It is a reading guide, and each hotel's official website is linked so you can deal with the property directly.

Why are casino hotels reviewed without the casino?

Plenty of travellers end up at these resorts for the setting, a concert or a deal on rooms, and never play. We wanted a list that serves them, so the stay alone sets the order.

How often is the showcase refreshed?

Each hotel is rechecked on a regular cycle and sooner when it renames, renovates or closes. The month beside the list heading tells you when the latest pass happened.

Who is this guide for?

Adults aged 18 or over. Casino entry ages differ by country, and some are higher, so check local rules before any trip.
